DESCRIPTION:Andrew is the third generation of his family to work as an archaeologist on Hadrian’s Wall after his father, Dr Robin Birley and his grandfather, Professor Eric Birley. He is the current Director of Excavations of the Vindolanda Trust and is its CEO. Andrew was awarded his PhD at the University of Leicester and his specialism is in the archaeology of the Roman Army and Roman frontiers. He has been working as an archaeologist for over 30 years and has appeared on numerous VT and radio programs.\nHis current projects include the excavation of Hadrian’s Wall at the fort of Magna and at Vindolanda.\nThe excavations of Vindolanda and Magna are tied to their complicated past but also through the very modern challenge of the impact of climate change on the preservation of archaeological landscapes. The work of the Vindolanda Trust has made some remarkable discoveries, but it also reminds us about what may be lost if we cannot preserve sites in situ for the benefit of future generations.\nDoors open at 7pm at Broad Street Methodist Church, Spalding. Lecture starts 7.30pm. Entry £5, full time students free.\n
